Neither of us had grey hair when we first met. John always had a steady sense of gratitude, curiosity and appreciation spiced with a non-judgemental sense of humour that ageing made deeper and richer. In recent years he was a constant presence on the G2G trail and first to respond to a downed tree or a blocked drain with his specially equipped e-bike. With his quiet optimism and irripresible enthusiasm, he and I were making plans for trail improvements this coming spring just a couple of weeks ago. John will be deeply missed.

It's always tough to say good-bye to anyone, especially to an individual as unique as John. He was a marvelous short-story teller, always with an unexpected punch-line right at the end, and almost always at his own expense. As a (highly sanitized) example, he would tell about his trepidation going to meet Jenny's parents for the first time because he was born in a part of the Netherlands where nobody much knew what religion even was and was hoping they wouldn't throw him out once they found out. His smile obviously won them over as it did with everyone he met thereafter. Goodbye, John, and here's hoping there's a chair waiting for you at the big table in the hereafter Grandview

Jenny and all of Johns family. I would like to offer my deepest condolences. When I moved to Blyth I met John at the Grandview. It didn’t take long to discover that we had similar interests. Woodworking, snowmobiling and the shooting sports. We had many snowmobiling trips over the next number of years. If by the grace of god we meet on the other side we can continue with these same interests. RIP old friend. Chuck Krieger.
