John was an amazing neighbor to Dave and I when we lived and farmed at Hilltop Farm down the road from John. Many a night was filled with stories and laughter! He will be greatly missed.
My sympathy to the Jeanne and the Gaunt Family for the loss of a great man.

To all John's family, We send our sincere sympathy to everyone. John's community involvement in the Belgrave area and Walton will be remembered fondly. He was loved in the Kirkby family circle. We enjoyed our special annual Christmas Eve visits with John, Jeanne, and family. Lots of stories were told and shared! John faced his recent health issues with an optimistic attitude and always said "it will get better". It's an honour to be his friend. Hugs. Marie and Neil

I shall always remember my involvement with Huron Hospice as we sold colchicums corms in the fall outside of the Bayfield library and at other venues trying to raise money for the local Hospice. One of our board members, dr Rob Shepherd had suggested the little purple flower (originally all were purchased from John directly,) could be a wonderful reminder that I’m the fall when it seems like the garden is dying up pops these lovely purple stems reminding us that life goes on. They were to become the emblematic flower of the provincial Palliative Care movement.
I also wondered how many folks donated ice cream tubs to John, I order for him to pot up the corms for sale on his wagon each September. RIP dear man. You have earned your rest.

We were saddened to find out about John's passing. Barry and John both farmed together in East Wawanosh and when he was in the UK Barry worked his farm for him. John was the best men at our wedding. However we lost touch with one another over the years.
He was truly an amazing man, had a great (but dry) sense of humor and he truly appreciated my pies lol!!
Please accept our deepest sympathy.

Sincere sympathies to Jeanne, her family and the Gaunt family. It is very hard to put into words how much he is and will be missed. The visits to our farm, telephone conversations - he was our neighbourhood historian! John made an impression on all. Last fall when he visited, our 21 month old grandson was also visiting. The chair where John sat that day was official called "John's chair" and is mentioned each time our grandson, who is 26 months old now, visits. Bob & I enjoyed his company and his stories. The 9th line won't be the same.....

My sincere condolences to Jean. I remember you Jean from the days when my late husband, Charlie Thomas, was first into computers and so were you. That was probably in the '90's. I remember going to see John's "naked ladies" and I did get some quite a while ago and they have multiplied and I have shared them with others. As we get older, it is gratifying to share a legacy like plants and I am grateful to John. I have noticed that the green of the leaves are up in my flowerbeds and I will think of you both again in the fall when they are in bloom. Sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear about Johns death. I never met him or knew him but was always thankful to him for the beautiful field of fall crocus. I make an annual trip up there from Dublin every year and am thankful for the beauty. Just last week when the leaves of my fall crocuses that I bought off the wagon came up I was thinking about the beautiful field. I will remember him every year when mine bloom and hope I continue to go up to see the field. Condolences.

Our sympathy to all those who are grieving the loss of John. Whether you are a relative friend or neighbour.
You knew you would always have some good laughs when you had a visit with John and Jeanne.
He was the only person who would mix peanuts and garlic buds as a snack food! They were quite tasty while eating them but the next day you knew how much garlic you had consumed!!
The Christmas cake and cookies were also a highlight!!
Rest in peace

Bill and I will miss Uncle John a great deal. He anchored the family in Huron County, and kept us connected to our roots. His story telling, and willingness to stretch a story is legendary, as is his generosity & good will.
