Obituary of Ethel Brown

Please share a memory of Ethel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
ETHEL BROWN passed away suddenly in her apartment in Paris on October 9, 2006 in her 95th year. Of Irish descent she was born October 19, 1911 in Howick Twp., Huron County. She and George Brown were married for 57 years. They moved to Gorrie in 1944. In 1948 she started as the Gorrie Correspondent for the Listowel Banner, eventually writing for 6 more newspapers and at one time had her own column "Grandma's Hints", last year writing her final column for the Wingham Advance Times. In Gorrie she was the Librarian, a charter member of the U.C.W., member of the United Church for 62 years, secretary of the Red Cross, a former member of the Loyal Orange Benevolent Society and a 4-H leader. She and George toured Canada numerous times in the antique cars he and their son built. After selling her home in Gorrie in June she moved permanently to Telfer Place in Paris. Her family and friends will miss her sense of humour, wit, positive attitude, and ability to make friends wherever she went. She also had the fortunate ability to make the very best of any situation. She possessed a very strong faith and a firm belief in prayer. She had been machine-sewing a quilt-top for charity during her final weekend. Grateful to have been blessed with her love and unfailing support are son John and Marie, Gorrie, daughter Jean and Norman Mulloy and granddaughters Kristie and Leslie of Paris. Sister-in-law Florence Brown of Kitchener and several nieces and nephews survive her also. She was predeceased by her husband in 1992, her parents John McCreery and Margaret Cathers, and sisters Esther (Ira) Neill, Eva (Webster) Jacklyn and brother Oliver (Agnes) McCreery. Visitation at the Gorrie Visitation Centre of the Schimanski Family Funeral Home, Gorrie Saturday October 21, 2006 1 p.m. and a Service to Celebrate her life at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Jeff Hawkins of the Gorrie United Church. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Gorrie United Church or the charity of your choice.
